Exactly twenty years after the first exhibition held in Taormina in December 1999 and subsequent editions (the last, GE / 14 Altro delle immagini, in 2014), the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation celebrates this long series of exhibitions that have distinguished in significantly four decades of photographic research in Italy with a new exhibition entitled GE / 19 Boiling Projects.
From the beginning of this journey, photography in Italy has traveled many roads, often autonomous among them, broadening the horizons and above all the meaning we would like to give to the image today. GE / 19 Boiling Projects claims the inherent fragmentation of photographic research, presented as a container of ideas and projects that, when fermenting, finally find solutions sometimes in line with the historical moment in which we live, other times presenting themselves as escape routes or, again, mirror of existential conditions.
Twenty-five artists are the protagonists of the new appointment, among which we find photographers who in 1999 were considered “emerging” and who today appear as references for the new generations. They are joined by a large group of younger artists.
The exhibition is conceived as a collection of “work in progress” – photographs, films, installations, performance documentation, stories by images – apparently heterogeneous which, in its entirety, appears compact in terms of expressive capacity and communicative modality.
From Guarene to Etna 2019 was created in collaboration with the OELLE Mediterraneo Antico Foundation of Catania which will host the exhibition in the spring of 2020.
